Ahead of Cos’ Fall 2024 show in September, dancer, actress and singer, Mette Towley met up with Karin Gustafsson, design director at Cos at the brand’s showroom for a VIP preview of the collection where the pair collaborated on two styled looks for the artist.
During Towley’s visit, Gustafsson walked Towley through the latest collection sharing that the brand has “continued working on the sort of timelessness that we always hold and evolving that with some styles inspired by dance.” The collection includes pieces that prioritize how movement comes across and fluidity, bringing romance throughout.
As previously reported by WWD, Cos’ collection includes an array of quiet luxury pieces that can play well with designer ones, capturing a similar spirit of minimalism seen in Toteme, The Row and Bottega Veneta, among others. Traditional seasonal trends are also seen including wool outerwear and tailoring, leather and oversized jackets, blouses, sheer layers and knits.
Towley, who counts dance as one of the greatest loves of her life was drawn to pieces that accentuated movement and was excited to learn that Pina Bausch, the German choreographer, was used as inspiration. Gustafsson explained that the designs use Bausch’s strength when it comes to expression in a way that can be quite delicate. The result, Towley and Gustafsson agreed, is a bit of “understated drama.”
Other pieces that stood out to Towley were the collection’s moments of color blocking, including a bright green that made appearances throughout. “I love this green,” she said trying on a pair of gloves, “It’s fierce, it’s romantic, theatrical and timeless.”
Notably, accessories offerings have continued to grow for Cos, with Gustafsson calling out ballet shoes in particular. In Cos’ show, the shoes were seen in shearling, pop green and pink. Several new clutches and a shopper tote also made their way down the runway.
Starting with Towley’s favorite pieces from the walkthrough, Gustafsson and Towley played with the way the collection was designed to be mixed and matched to create two separate looks for the artist to wear at Cos’ NYFW events including one to wear to the brand’s show and another for its celebratory dinner later that evening.
